What insurance does a contractor in Georgia need?

Most Georgia contractors start with general liability, then add commercial auto, workers' comp, and coverage for tools and equipment based on their work, crew and contracts. What you need depends on your trade and on what your clients or general contractor require.

Common coverages for contractors

  • General liability: can cover third-party bodily injury, property damage, and personal and advertising injury claims, subject to the policy's terms and exclusions. Many contracts ask for it.
  • Commercial auto: for trucks and vans used for the business. Personal auto policies may not cover business use.
  • Workers' compensation: pays medical bills and lost wages if an employee is hurt on the job. In Georgia, a business that regularly employs three or more people, full-time or regular part-time, generally must carry it. Corporate officers and LLC members count toward that number.
  • Tools and equipment / property: protects gear against theft, fire and storm damage. Coverage depends on the policy.
  • Umbrella: extra liability limits above your other policies.

Contracts, certificates and additional insureds

General contractors often ask for a certificate of insurance, and sometimes for "additional insured" wording or specific limits. Read the contract before you sign, and send it to us. We'll help you match the coverage to what's being asked for.

Subcontractors without workers' comp

Form WC-10 is filed with your insurance company to elect or reject coverage for certain officers, LLC members, sole proprietors or partners. It is not a state-issued exemption certificate, so don't count on it to satisfy a general contractor. Under Georgia law, a contractor can be held liable for a subcontractor's employees' injuries if the subcontractor has no workers' comp. That's why many GCs require subs to carry a policy or charge them for it.
